Willie pries the coffin open hoping to find the legendary missing jewels, but instead finds the vampire, Barnabas Collins. Barnabas grabs Willie by the throat and turns him into his unwilling slave. It’s pretty clear what Hap Jackson (Justin Long) is hoping will follow when he offers Mina Murray (Kate Bosworth, eerily difficult to read) a ride home from the local bar. Guys like Hap refer to nights like this as “getting lucky,” though he’s almost certain to have a different view of things once this tryst is through. The lucky one here in fact is Mina, whose motives aren’t nearly as apparent — the uncertainty of which drives the sense of creeping dread that percolates over the next hour and a half, depicted practically in real time. After writer-director Neil LaBute's long absence from movies, his big-screen comeback flips the dynamic of 'In the Company of Men' for horror crowds.
Cast
Barnabas pulls the bolt from the mortally wounded Willie's back, wheels around and attempts to use his vampiric hypnosis on Jeff. Barnabas drops the crossbow bolt, which is noticed by the dying Willie--still laying on the floor. Just as Barnabas is about to vampirize Maggie, hands drive the crossbow bolt into his back. Howling in pain, he turns to see Willie, who has used his last bit of life energy to stop the vampire.
Timeline
Willie tells Roger to look for his own kid, thus incurring Roger’s ire - he is promptly fired. But the real mystery is why a new Neil LaBute movie doesn’t seem to be on anybody’s radar. But judging by the result, this wicked little movie suggests his voice may be uniquely suited to the broader conversation. Hap thinks of himself as a “decent guy,” and because Long is such an inherently likable actor, some may give his character the benefit of the doubt. This clearly isn’t his first one-night stand — nor Mina’s, as a pile of men’s loafers seen over the opening and closing credits unsettlingly suggests.
House of Darkness
Barnabas gains entrance to the mansion by introducing himself as a cousin from England, and Willie becomes his first victim. Carolyn Collins, the lady of the house, is Barnabas' next victim, and doctors Julia Hoffman and T. Their diagnosis of vampirism is confirmed when Carolyn returns from the dead to seek her own victims, but she is killed by a stake driven through her heart.
Her opening aria was sensationally good, while her mad scene was not merely vocally breathtaking – sung in a disembodied tone that dovetailed well with Katherine Baker’s flute obbligato – but was also genuinely disturbing to witness. Earlier generations tended to see Donizetti’s 1835 adaptation of Scott’s story of feuding families in the Scottish hills as just a vehicle for the coloratura soprano singing Lucia to show off her vocal agility. Maria Callas’s seriousness and dramatic gifts blew that away in the 1950s. Katie Mitchell’s 2016 production, revived here for the second time, deepens and darkens the work still further for the post-#MeToo era. Driving home to her secluded estate after meeting at a local bar, a player out to score thinks his beautiful, mysterious date will be another casual hook-up.
House of Dark Shadows
He'd have to be tucked in by sunrise, and no stirring until maybe 9 at night. I would even argue that Coppola’s film is closer in tone with Dark Shadows, at least in its romantic moments, than Tim Burton’s big budget Dark Shadows movie was in 2012. But Burton also played her and the whole concept as pure camp, making the Collins’ a subject of ridicule, and their problems a punchline. Even so, Carolyn cannot displace Maggie (still Scott) in Barnabas’ eyes, who he is sure is the reincarnation of Josette.
This historic preservation project is our birthday gift to America,” Bradburn said. “Darkness” broadcasts its intentions early, underscored by the blood-red fonts, nostalgic score and other self-aware nods to classic horror. Later, Todd decides to see if there is any truth behind Stokes’ bizarre theory. Carolyn appears from out of the darkness and bites him, leaving him hospitalised with blood loss and under her spell.
What to Watch
House of Dark Shadows is a 1970 American feature-length horror film produced and directed by Dan Curtis, based on his Dark Shadows television series. In this film expansion, vampire Barnabas Collins (Jonathan Frid) searches for a cure for vampirism so he can marry a woman who resembles his long-lost fiancée Josette (Kathryn Leigh Scott). In 1970 House of Dark Shadows flipped the vampire subgenre on its head.
Even in these troubled times, the vampire has it worse than most of us. He's got to spend all day in his coffin, coming out only at night. That's OK if you're a short-order cook on the midnight shift and enjoy daytime TV. It's bad enough for an ordinary kid to have to go to bed, but imagine a vampire kid in, say, July.

The two struggle with one another and Willie knocks Jeff out temporarily. Jeff awakens moments later and follows Barnabas and Willie's trail to an abandoned chapel within the castle. While getting acquainted, their flirtation turns playful, sexy and sinister. Along with music performed by a live three-piece band, Patti & Theo features shadow play. As Mount Vernon's Mansion Revitalization Project proceeds into 2026, take a deep dive into the various aspects of this landmark preservation project. “As we conduct a historic preservation effort at the iconic home of America’s first President and revolutionary hero, we have been deliberate and intentional about carefully excavating areas of potential disruption,” said Mount Vernon President & CEO Doug Bradburn. “Consequently, we have made a number of useful discoveries including this blockbuster find of two fully intact glass bottles containing liquid that have not been seen since before the war for American independence.
Julia meanwhile, has found that she is falling in love with Barnabas, and is crushed when she discovers that he only has his eyes set on Maggie. With feelings of rejection overwhelming her, she deliberately sabotages Barnabas’ next injection. Moments after taking his regularly scheduled serum, Barnabas begins to transform into a hideous old man. He sees Julia’s luggage, packed and ready and realizes that she intentionally betrayed him.
